What Shoes to Wear to an Indian Wedding: A Men's Guide for Every Function
An Indian wedding is not one event; it is a series of them. Haldi in the morning, mehendi in the afternoon, a sangeet that runs late into the night, the ceremony itself and then the reception. Each function has its own mood and its own dress code, and the shoes that look right at one can look completely wrong at another.
Whether you are the groom, a groomsman or a guest with a packed calendar this season, here is how to choose the right shoes for every function, with pairs from the FRONK ROYALE collection for each.
Haldi and Mehendi: relaxed, colourful and comfortable
These are the most relaxed functions of the wedding. They are usually daytime events, often outdoors, and the dress code leans towards light kurtas, linen and bright colours. You will be sitting on the floor, dancing and moving around a lot, so comfort matters as much as style.
This is the place for suede loafers and driving moccasins. They slip on and off easily, feel light on the foot and suit a kurta-pyjama far better than a formal lace-up.
Our picks: the Alba Luxe Loafer in soft ivory-beige suede, which pairs beautifully with white and pastel kurtas; The Riviera Blue Tassel Loafer in blue suede for a little more colour; and the Marquis Driving Moc, with a flexible pebble sole made for a long day on your feet.
A practical tip: turmeric stains. At the haldi, choose a pair you are relaxed about, and keep your finest shoes for later in the celebrations.
Sangeet and Cocktail Night: this is where you make a statement
The sangeet is the one night where more is more. Outfits get bolder, the lights go down and the dance floor fills up. Your shoes should rise to the occasion.
Velvet and patent leather are your best friends here. Velvet adds depth and a sense of occasion, while patent leather catches the light every time you move. Pair them with an Indo-western jacket, a tuxedo or a dark bandhgala.
Our picks: The Black Baroque Slip-On in luxurious black velvet, designed to complement tuxedos and bandhgala suits; the Eclipse Patent Leather Tuxedo Loafers with a mirror-like, high-gloss finish; and The Phantom Oxford, whose shaded finish and metallic detailing are made for evening dressing.
The Wedding Ceremony: sherwani, achkan and bandhgala
For the ceremony itself, traditional outfits take centre stage. A sherwani or achkan with churidar calls for footwear with a slim, elegant profile that will not look heavy under the outfit.
Traditional juttis are one option, but if you want something more structured, Jodhpur boots are a superb choice. Their wraparound strap and buckle sit neatly at the ankle, and the slim silhouette works perfectly with churidar. Velvet loafers are another refined option, especially for evening ceremonies.
Our picks: The Sovereign Amber Jodhpur Boots, whose warm amber-brown tone complements ivory, gold and pastel sherwanis; the Cognac Regent Jodhpur Boots for a richer cognac shade; and The Belmont Velvet Loafer in black velvet with refined embroidered detailing, made for ceremonial dressing.
Colour tip: take your cue from the embroidery. Gold, ivory and beige work sit best with tan, amber and cognac shoes, while deep maroon, navy and black outfits look strongest with black velvet or polished black leather.
The Reception: sharp tailoring, polished shoes
Most receptions move to Western tailoring: a well-cut suit, a tuxedo or a sleek bandhgala. This is the moment for classic formal footwear, polished to a high shine.
A black Oxford is the safest and most elegant choice with a suit or tuxedo. A double monk strap is a stylish alternative that adds character without breaking the dress code.
Our picks: The Firenze Black Oxford, with a clean, closed-lace silhouette and a polished finish; The Grand Regent Monk in croc-embossed leather with polished buckles; and, for the groom who wants something truly one of a kind, The Atelier Edition, a hand-painted floral marquetry Oxford produced in limited quantities, so no two pairs are ever quite identical.
For guests: one pair that covers every function
Not everyone wants to travel with five pairs of shoes. If you are attending as a guest and want one pair that works across most functions, choose a double monk strap in a rich colour. It looks right with a bandhgala at the ceremony, a suit at the reception and even a smart kurta at the sangeet.
The Firenze Double Monk in deep mahogany and The Verona Burgundy Monk are both ideal all-rounders for the wedding season.

Plan ahead: order early and break them in
The most common wedding footwear mistake is wearing a brand-new pair for the first time on the big day. Quality leather shoes need a short break-in period. We recommend wearing them for a few hours a day at first and building up over one to two weeks, so they have softened and moulded to your feet well before the celebrations begin.
If you want a pair tailored to you, with an extra inch of heel height, a half-size fitting adjustment, a custom colour or a particular finish, allow around 15 days for your customised order to be made. For a wedding, we suggest ordering at least three to four weeks ahead so there is time for both making and breaking in.
Every FRONK ROYALE pair is handcrafted in India from premium leather, so the shoes you wear through this wedding season will stay with you for many more to come.
