Oxford, Derby, Monk Strap or Loafer? How to Choose the Right Formal Shoe

Walk into any good shoe shop and the formal section can look like a row of near-identical black and brown shoes. Look closer, though, and there are really only four families: the Oxford, the Derby, the Monk Strap and the Loafer. Each one has its own level of formality, its own fit and its own occasions.

Once you know the difference, choosing the right pair becomes simple. Here is a clear guide to all four, with pairs from the FRONK ROYALE collection to show what each style looks like at its best.

The Oxford: the most formal shoe you can own

An Oxford is defined by its closed lacing. The two leather flaps that hold the eyelets are stitched underneath the front of the shoe, so they close neatly into a clean V. The result is a sleek, low-profile silhouette that sits perfectly under a suit trouser.

That clean line is why the Oxford is the default for business suits, boardrooms, formal dinners and black-tie events. The plainer it is, the more formal it becomes. A smooth black Oxford is the most formal of all. Add brogue perforations and it moves slightly towards smart-casual.

  • Wear it with: suits, tuxedos, bandhgalas and sharp tailored trousers.
  • Choose black for business and evening wear, and brown for daytime and smart-casual.

Our picks: the Kingsford Executive Shoes, a clean black Oxford built for the boardroom; The Firenze Black Oxford, with a polished, minimalist finish for formal and evening wear; and The Strathmore Brogue in brown, for when you want detail and a little more personality.

The Derby: formal enough, far more forgiving

At first glance a Derby looks a lot like an Oxford. The difference is open lacing: the eyelet flaps are stitched on top of the shoe and open outwards. That small change gives the Derby a slightly chunkier look and, more importantly, a more adjustable fit.

If you have a high instep or wider feet, a Derby is often far more comfortable than an Oxford. It works with a suit at the office, yet it looks just as right with chinos and a blazer at the weekend, which makes it one of the most versatile shoes a man can buy.

  • Wear it with: office wear, chinos, blazers, smart denim and relaxed suits.
  • Best for: long days on your feet and anyone who finds Oxfords tight across the top.

Our picks: The Belgravia Brown Derby Shoes with Lite Sole, polished enough for formal wear with a lightweight sole for all-day comfort; the Flexon Derby in chestnut-brown grained leather on a flexible white wedge sole, for a more contemporary look; and the Black Patent Leather Derby Shoes when the evening calls for high shine.

The Monk Strap: the confident middle ground

The Monk Strap has no laces at all. Instead, it closes with one or two buckled straps across the front of the foot. The double monk is the most popular version today, and for good reason: it looks dressy, it is easy to put on, and it instantly sets you apart from a room full of lace-ups.

In formality, a monk strap sits between the Oxford and the Derby. It is smart enough for a suit, and it has enough character to lift a simple outfit. One styling tip: wear it with trousers that have little or no break at the hem so the buckles stay visible.

  • Wear it with: suits, bandhgalas, tailored trousers and smart-casual layers.
  • Best for: the man who wants to look polished without looking predictable.

Our picks: The Firenze Double Monk, in a deep mahogany finish that develops its own patina over time; The Verona Burgundy Monk, a rich burgundy that suits weddings as well as business meetings; and The Grand Regent Monk in croc-embossed leather for real presence.

The Loafer: effortless, and more formal than you think

The Loafer is a laceless slip-on, and it covers the widest range of styles. The penny loafer has a leather saddle strap across the top, the horsebit loafer adds a metal bar, the tassel loafer carries small leather tassels, and the driving moccasin has a soft, flexible sole made for comfort.

Traditionally, loafers were the least formal of the four. Today, a sleek black leather loafer sits comfortably with tailoring, while suede and driving styles are perfect for relaxed weekends, travel and warm days.

  • Wear it with: tailored trousers, chinos, linen, kurtas and smart denim, with or without a blazer.
  • Best for: smart-casual dressing, travel and anyone who likes to slip their shoes on and go.

Our picks: The Sterling Horsebit Shoes in black leather, which move easily from formal occasions to smart-casual; The Riviera Blue Tassel Loafer in blue suede with brown tassels; and the Marquis Driving Moc in hand-finished burgundy leather with a flexible pebble sole.

Building your collection: where to start

If you are buying your first quality pair, start with a black Oxford. It covers business, formal and evening wear, and it will never look out of place. Next, add a brown Derby or Monk Strap for everyday and smart-casual wear. Then complete the set with a loafer for weekends, travel and warmer days. With those three pairs, you are ready for almost any dress code.

Getting the fit right

Every FRONK ROYALE pair is handcrafted in India from premium leather, and like all quality leather footwear it benefits from a short break-in period. For the most comfortable fit, wear new shoes for a few hours a day at first and build up over one to two weeks. The leather will soften and mould to your foot.

If you need something a little more personal, we offer select customisations, including heel height adjustments of up to an extra inch, half-size fitting adjustments, colour options and a choice of finish. Customised pairs take around 15 days to make, so plan ahead if you need them for a particular date.

Whichever style you choose, choose it well. A great pair of shoes does not just finish an outfit; it changes how you carry yourself in it.
